About StartedBlack

Built by someone who started where you are.

StartedBlack is a Charlotte public benefit company helping Black-owned businesses build the legal and back-office foundation that most can't afford to buy — through hands-on help, plain-language education, and a network of attorneys and CPAs who volunteer their expertise.

It usually starts the same way. Someone has a real skill — they cook, they cut hair, they build, they sell — and they decide to bet on themselves. Then they hit the part nobody trained them for: the LLC, the operating agreement, the licenses, the contracts, the certifications. The paperwork that turns a hustle into a business that can sign deals, hire people, and last.

That part is expensive. Lawyers and formation services are priced for companies that already have money — which is exactly the moment a new owner doesn't. So the paperwork gets skipped, or done wrong, and a great idea ends up sitting on a foundation that can't hold weight.

We close that gap — with hands-on help, plain-language education, and a network of professionals who donate their expertise.

StartedBlack handles the back office so Black founders can focus on the thing they're actually good at — and when a matter needs a licensed attorney or CPA, we bring one in from our volunteer network rather than leaving the owner to figure it out alone.

We work the way we'd want to be worked with: virtually so we can reach more people, in person in Charlotte for the things that are better face to face, and honestly about what we can and can't do. We're a public benefit company, building deliberately and choosing to do this right rather than fast.

Mission
StartedBlack removes the cost barrier that stops good businesses before they begin — giving Black-owned businesses the legal and back-office foundation to start right, stay compliant, and grow into engines of generational wealth.
Our vision: One Million Black Businesses Formed
Built to hire, built to last. Built by StartedBlack.
Why one million

4.4 million Black-owned businesses in America have no employees. About 201,000 do.

Black-owned firms are 14.4% of every U.S. business that runs without employees — and 3.4% of the businesses that employ people.

That drop-off is where we work. It is not a talent gap. It is a foundation gap, and closing it is the one thing we know how to do.

Calvin Williams
Founder
Calvin was raised in Charlotte — a city built on the recognition that access to the right systems determines who gets to grow. He is the founder of Meridian Nuclear, an institutional advisory firm working where nuclear power meets AI infrastructure, advising developers, capital allocators, and operators on the siting and corridor decisions that determine whether a project is viable; GridMind, the Delaware technology company that owns the scoring and corridor-intelligence systems behind that advisory work; and Luxe Global Living, a real estate venture. Different industries, one lesson: a company's survival gets decided by its structure long before it gets decided by its product. Along the way he watched capable Black founders stall for one reason above all — that foundation was priced out of reach, so it got skipped, or done wrong. He started helping owners get set up one at a time, then built StartedBlack to do it at scale.

This only works together.

Owners who need a foundation. Professionals who can build one. Funders who make it possible. There's a place for you here.
