Is it really free? What's the catch?
It depends where your business stands, not how long it has existed. Every application is underwritten. If the business isn't carrying itself yet and you're approved for Groundwork, it's free and we will never ask you for payment. If it's established, there's a price and we publish it openly.
Are you lawyers? Is this legal advice?
StartedBlack is not a law firm, and we don't provide legal representation. We provide business-formation assistance, education, templates, and administrative help. When your situation needs actual legal advice, we connect you with licensed attorneys in our volunteer network — at no cost to you. See our disclaimer for details.
Who qualifies for help?
We focus on Black-owned businesses and Black-led community organizations in Charlotte and the surrounding region — at any stage. What it costs is decided by underwriting — free if the business isn't carrying itself yet, priced openly if it is. If you're not sure, apply anyway and we'll tell you before any work starts.
How long does it take?
It depends on what you need. A simple formation can move quickly; certifications and more involved setups take longer. After you apply, your foundation review gives you a realistic, prioritized timeline — no vague promises.
Do I have to be in Charlotte?
Our roots and our in-person sessions are in Charlotte, and we prioritize the Charlotte region. Most of our help is delivered virtually, so we have some flexibility — apply and tell us where you are.
What does it cost you, and how is this sustainable?
Filing fees, certifications, and the tools we use cost real money, and our volunteers give real time. Sponsorship and community funding cover the rest. If you want this to exist for the next founder, that's how you help.

Will StartedBlack pay my government filing fees?
Sometimes. Government filing fees — like North Carolina's $125 to form an LLC — are paid to the state, not to us, and they're normally yours to cover. We keep a small fund to help founders who genuinely can't, and we'll always tell you what a fee is before any work starts. Our own help is free to those who qualify.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. What you share is used only to help you. We never sell it, and we won’t pass it to a volunteer attorney, CPA, or partner without asking you first. See our privacy policy.
